TURIN SHERWOOD CAMP '09: WORTHY RAGE STARTS OFF!
THE MOVEMENT STARTS AGAIN!!!
1. Let’s cooperate!
There exist other examples both at local and national level, that have a lot to say and teach about development and sustainability. What we need today is to join forces, that is why our mobilisation, the rebuke to G8 and the Climate Camp go beyond the University world and are open to all comers.
2. University, Development, Society
The “Onda” (literally “Wave”, the Italian mobilisation against the law 133) slips away, the pirates stay. These months of mobilisation have to represent a starting point, not a sticking one. The issue regarding the right to study are closely related to economic and social development. Culture is society, and they must not be disjointed nor analysed separately.
Turin’s G8 would like to establish an idea of research based on income, economic development reached through a production increase. This cultural pattern is tied up to Gross Domestic Product, to corporations’ interest, to the dictatorship of economic benefit and to decisions taken by a few powerful people in behalf of all the other.
The Kind of University and research we require are, instead, head for social and cultural development both of the single human being and of the community: a place where the word “education” possesses a real meaning of cultural, psychological and social emancipation for the student. There cannot exist a real meritocracy without public University: we are going to keep on our battle for everybody’s right to enter the highest levels of education, and against the precariousness of the research!
3. Sherwood Camp!
During the three days of the mobilisation against the Summit we want to distance ourselves from some of the habits of a lot of demonstrations. Here is the Climate Camp’s idea: a peaceful and ecologically sustainable garrison in which to bring our contribution through our observations and alternative habits. Our civil disobedience will be carried out wandering off the beaten tracks, in a creative and pacific way.
